KUJAWSKO - POMORSKIE
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VOIVODSHIP

The Kujawsko-Pomorskie region lies in north-central Poland. Its northern part is occupied by several lakes of the Pomeranian Lakeland and the moraine hills of the Chelminsko-Dobrzynskie Lakeland, to the west there is a fragment of the Wielkopolska (Great Poland) Lakeland, while in the south of the voivodship there is the Lowland of Kujawy. Kujawsko Pomorskie is an old region situated at the borderland of the Russian and Prussian partition. The historically strong ties of Torun and Gdansk provide now good ground for multifaceted co operation between Kuţawsko-Pomorskie and Pomorskie voivodships. The Vistula River, a traditional trade route in medieval Poland, links the largest centres of the voivodship: Wloclawek, Torun, Bydgoszcz and Grudziadz. In the new administrative structure the city of Bydgoszcz (almost 400,000 inhabitants) is the seat of the voivod, while the city of Torun (over 200,000 inhabitants) houses the voivodship Council The north south trans-European motorway, which is now under construction, crosses near Torun with a major national highway linking Szczecin, Bydgoszcz and Warsaw.

ECONOMY

The voivodship has a mixed agricultural and industrial character. The high farming culture and one of the largest productivities of agriculture in the country cause that the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region is dominated by the food processing industry (concentrates from Wloclawek, oil from Kruszwica, famous honey-cakes from Torun). However, the three biggest companies in the voivodship, Anwil S.A. in Wloclawek, Frantschach Cellulose Works in Swiecie and Organika-Zachem in Bydgoszcz, represent the chemical sector, which is the second major industry in the voivodship. The voivodship's economy is represented by almost 133,000, mostly small and medium-sized, companies, 97.3% of which are in the private sector. Numerous former state-owned companies have been taken over by foreign investors, which has encouraged Polish and foreign banks to open branches in the region. Thanks to the well-developed system of business services, investment in the region has been facilitated. The voivodship is attractive for many reasons: good agricultural structure and a high level of farming, well developed industry, high employment, and business services developed by financial institutions. According to estimates by the State Agency for Foreign Investments, the total value of foreign capital invested in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship is between USD 600 and 800 million.

UNIVERSITIES

The Kujawsko Pomorskie voivodship is the seat of the largest university in northern Poland - the Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun. Approximately 28,000 young people study here. Torun also hosts one of the oldest military schools in Poland - the Jozef Bem Military Academy. The most important university in Bydgoszcz is the Technical and Agricultural Academy (10,000 students), but one can also find the Pedagogic University, the Medical Academy and the Musical Academy here. In Wloclawek, the third largest city of the voivodship, young people can study at the private School of Humanities and Economics.

TOURISM

The Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodship is also very interesting from a tourist's point of view. Of all the antiquities in the region, the most popular is the well-preserved, medieval Old Town in Torun, endorsed by UNESCO in its List of World Cultural Heritage. The terraced houses of Bydgoszcz's Old Town are some of the most beautiful examples of Polish Art Nouveau. The rarity of the region is the 2,700 year old pre-Slavic stronghold in Biskupin Ciechocinek, a unique spa dating from 1828, is a popular resort for thousands of Polish and foreign visitors. Outdoor lovers are attracted by the Bory Tucholskie National Park, one of the largest forest areas in the country, as well as by the lake country and landscape parks.
